Review: In This Moment (Inheritance Series Book 2) by Candice M Wright

In This Moment In This Moment by Candice M. Wright
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Enjoyable Contemporary Reverse Harem

I enjoyed this book a lot. There was plenty of angst, sexy times and fun.

This second book in the series was less dark than the first Inheritance Novel, but it definitely still had it’s shadowy areas. There was lots of murder and mayhem, along with 5 gorgeous guys falling for Gracie, extremely quickly.

It had a complex plot to keep your brain happy, interesting characters to give you the warm and fuzzies and hot sex to make you melt.

Definitely worth a read.

Review: The Fallen One (Fated Wings Series Book 2.5) by CR Jane

The Fallen One The Fallen One by C.R. Jane

Damon’s Backstory

I'd probably give this 3.5 stars if I could.

This novella tell of the important facts of Damon’s Falling. In the first book in the series he thinks about someone called Camilla, and the name is never mentioned again. This story is about who she is and why Damon felt guilty about her.

The book also tells a little about Damon meeting Eva and their early days together from his point of view.

The book doesn’t progress the story at all, but it does give important information. It probably could have been included in the previous two books, but having it in one place means the time line is less disrupted in the series.

Review: The Warrior's Assault (Age of Andinna Series Book 3) by Kristen Banet

The Warrior's Assault The Warrior's Assault by Kristen Banet
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Stunning Fantasy

This series is one that I fell in love with from the first book, but this book is utterly enthralling. Kristen Banet is an incredibly gifted writer, she creates captivating characters that you can relate to and admire, and she crafts worlds that you can almost see. Her plot creation is brilliant and keeps you turning page after page, long after you are supposed to be asleep.

In this book we see Mave settled into her new place in the village and she has relaxed into life with her men. She is truly happy. She even starts to come to terms with the other women in the village as she learns to open up a little more. The complex relationships within the Company are explored further and at the end of the book, I still have no idea how they are all going to pan out.

The plot in this book grows quickly and soon starts to move at great pace, with events unfolding in unexpected ways. Each decision made by the king pulling the rest of his people onwards, taking Mave and the company with him, as they stand behind him.

This is a beautifully crafted book and I can’t wait to see what this author comes up with next, I just know it will be excellent.

Review: Awaken (The Sleeping Court Series Book 2) by Dagmar Avery and K Margaret

Awaken Awaken by Dagmar Avery & K Margaret
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Plot Heats Up

I’d give this book 4.5 stars if I could.

In my review of the first book I said that there wasn’t much new plot-wise in the start of this series, but things are moving in a more unique direction in this second book.

One of the things I like about this series is that the Captain of the Princess’ Guards, Arien, is a woman, and a fox shifter rather than an all powerful fae. She is strong and focused and loves Verity, and is loved in return. It’s quite unusual to get a woman in a reverse harem and I like it.

I also enjoyed that Verity is made alliances with other houses, not just collecting people for her guard. She also acquires staff. All these people are interesting and diverse in nature and personality. The authors have done a good job in creating characters who are different from each other.

As Verity gathers guards, staff and alliances the attacks on her court step up a gear and it is up to her guards to work out how to keep her safe. Through all the challenges, Verity starts to feel her magic growing and gathering in strength.

Things are definitely becoming more interesting and I can’t wait to read the next book.

Review: The Mercenary's Bounty (Age of Andinna Series Book 2) by Kristen Banet

The Mercenary's Bounty The Mercenary's Bounty by Kristen Banet
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

LOVE This Series

This is the second book in the Age of Andinna Series and I loved the first book a lot. This book is even better, because now I’m invested in the characters.

After escaping from the Empress, Mave and the Ivory Shadow Mercenary Company are travelling by ship to a new country, where Andinna treated as free citizens. The travel by ship takes over a month and we learn a lot about Mave, and the men she is now going to be working with, as they are forced to spend time together in close quarters. Mave is finding it hard being trapped with a large group of strange men after spending 1000 years trapped in the pits with gladiators who hated her and wanted to either rape her or kill her. Her new reality is very different and she’s trying to deal with the changes.

I love how this book starts to peel back the layers of Mave’s personality and how she is handling being free. A 1000 years of slavery, violence and abuse have taken their toll on the way she interacts with others but the group luckily has experience with dealing with escaped slaves.

We also get to see how a dominant female joining a group with some quite dominant males can shake things up. I love how Mat takes care of her and tries to make sure she’s happy, but is scared he’ll be replaced.

We get to see how the Company all interact with each other. We learn about their friendships and history and the love and respect they have for each other. The friendships are just as beautiful as the romances, surviving for 100s and 1000s of years.

This is a gripping story, with amazingly captivating characters and I loved every page. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

Review: Rewriting Yesterday (Inheritance Series Book 1) by Candice M Wright

Rewriting Yesterday Rewriting Yesterday by Candice M. Wright
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Emotionally Challenging Contemporary Reverse Harem

I would probably give this book 4.5 stars if I could.

This is a contemporary reverse harem novel set in the UK. The story starts when Joe is diagnosed with cancer. A successful business man who has become estranged with his military son, has to face the consequences of his poor choices during his life. He finds himself sitting on a bench outside the hospital when a young woman passes him a tissue. This 17 year old, Frankie, talks to him and discovers that they are both alone and scared.

Frankie is beaten and has been abused for years. Joe wants to keep her safe and proposes a marriage of convenience to keep her Mother and Step-Father away from her. This is the start of an unusual and close platonic relationship that lasts 5 years, until his death.

We then jump to the reading of his will. After leaving everything to Frankie his son, Caleb, automatically jumps to the conclusion that Frankie must be a gold digger and his Dad is disgusting for a marrying a 17 year old.

This is the start of a very difficult and dangerous process as Caleb comes to understand Frankie and tries to find a way to forgive his father for the mistakes he made.

Frankie is a very unusual woman; strong, brave and loving. She intelligent and understands herself and feels a driving need to help others and pass along her own good fortune.

I love that she has good friends around her to support her through the trials she goes through after the death of Joe. She has strong ties to the community through her volunteer work. Those friends stand by her when everything goes horribly wrong and Caleb and his two friends Ryan and Sam have much to atone for.

A brief warning, there is discussion of child abuse and rape throughout the book. It’s not explicit in detail but it is part of the story and the emotions that those events caused in the characters are discussed. If these subjects cause you emotional harm, I would suggest avoiding this book.

Review: The Gladiator's Downfall (The Age of Andinna Series Book 1 ) by Kristen Banet

The Gladiator's Downfall The Gladiator's Downfall by Kristen Banet
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Fantastic start to a new fantasy series

Sooooo good!! This book merges the best of two genres. It has the best of an epic fantasy series with a large cast of characters in a sweeping story-line in a brand new universe. It also has the best things about the reverse harem genre, that is the exploration about romantic and emotional feelings between multiple partners, not just between the males and female in the relationship but also between the males as well. Despite there only being one romantic tie explored in this book, there are potential ties dangled towards the end of the book and there are also the familial ties of both blood and choice explored too.

In this book the world we explore is small. It is the world of the Pits. The underground prison where the gladiators of the empress dwell, and the Champion, Mave, the only female gladiator who has reigned unchallenged for centuries. She is a 1000 years old and has been a slave since she was 5. She is Andinna and hated by her own people as she was the reason the war that cost them their freedom was lost.

Mave has spent her life in slavery, being abused, tortured and fighting for her life. Her own people could choose to support and educate her, but they instead hurl insults and seek to harm her physically at every turn. She has been alone for a 1000 years until the day when two new slaves arrive. They are Rainev and Matesh and they are the empress’ new slaves. Before them, Mave was her only personal gladiator. This tenuous link allows Mave to form her first bonds.

This book has so much pain and suffering in it, but it also has hope and warmth and joy. The author states that there will be 7 books in the series, so we know it’s going to be an epic storyline. I can’t wait to read the next one!

Review: Forgotten Specters (Fated Wings Series Book 2) by CR Jane

Forgotten Specters Forgotten Specters by C.R. Jane
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What kind of supernatural?

The book follows Eva as she starts to bond with Damon, Mason and Beckham. She has moments when she seems to disappear into visions of a place she doesn’t recognise and a time she doesn’t remember. Her memories contain Beckham, but not as he appears now.

She has feelings for all three of the men, and can’t choose between them. However, the men all want her to choose and for it to be them. Until she chooses though, they all want to spend time with her and are willing not to throw jealous fits around the others, even if they don’t like the situation.

Eva’s friendship with Lexi continues to grow as she seems to be the only woman on the cheer squad who seems friendly instead of jealous.

Eva also is introduced to the fact that the three guys are supernatural, but she doesn’t know what kind. They think she is the same kind of supernatural as Beckham but as he doesn’t know what kind he is, that doesn’t help. One thing she does know is that her powers probably won’t manifest until her 18th birthday in a few weeks time.

For a while things continue on, until the unthinkable happens.....

Review: First Impressions (Fated Wings Series Book 1) by CR Jane

First Impressions First Impressions by C.R. Jane
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Intriguing Start To The Series

This is an intriguing book. It’s definitely about supernatural beings, but there is very little discussion of how they are supernatural and their abilities. There are just enough hints to draw you along, waiting for the next tidbit to drop.

Eva has spent the last four years trapped in an attic by her foster parents. The husband is drawn to her and the wife beats her for being attractive. She is homeschooled and somehow she finds a letter accepting her to a university she didn’t apply to along with a full scholarship. When the time finally comes she escapes by stealing some money and gets a bus to New York where her life changes drastically.

One thing Eva doesn’t understand is why men are so drawn to her that she feels uncomfortable, and why so many women hate her on sight. Then she meets Damon, a college football playing superstar who also acts in films with his friend Beckham and sings on stage occasionally with his friend Mason who’s in a rock band.

All three men share an unearthly beauty that has people falling at their feet. It appears that there is something very different about these men.

I like that there is a slow build up to Eva discovering things about herself. It’s more believable that someone with special abilities wouldn’t really know about them until they tried them out and why would they try them without something prompting them into doing something unusual?

I’m interested to see where this series goes next, because I want to know what she is, and why everyone wants her.

Slumber Slumber by Dagmar Avery
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Good Start to a Fae Reverse Harem Series

I'd probably give this 3.5 stars if I could

I do love a good fae tale, even more so if it’s reverse harem. Let’s face it, the fae know how to get debauched!

This story starts with Verity being approached just after her 28th birthday by a lawyer to give her an inheritance. So far, so predictable.

Verity travels to the house she has inherited where she meets Carrigan, her advisor. He tells her that she is a fae princess and in 6 months she will be forced to take place in games to win the queenship of Faerie, against all the other princesses. In order to do that she needs to select her guard, who will be drawn to her now she has passed her 28th birthday. Again there is nothing new here.

She attracts guards and feels a deep connection with them almost immediately. She has to quickly learn who her guards are and to prepare for an influx of further guards and staff, who will come from the nobility who are part of her court.

It’s quite an interesting book and despite the plot not being terribly original, I enjoyed it. The characters are fun and there is plenty of sexy scenes as the guards connect with their princess.

I will definitely be reading the next book in the series.

Review: The Queen of Carnage (The Underestimated Series Book 1) by Candice M Wright

The Queen of Carnage The Queen of Carnage by Candice M. Wright
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Flipping Awesome Book!

I love MC Books. They are my guilty pleasure because to be honest some of them make me feel a bit uneasy about the way women are treated and referred to. This book takes away that uneasiness so well. It has all the awesome alpha males we want from our MC books and it also has the cute but feisty heroine who gets roped in despite herself. But it also has an informed and strong heroine who has no problems articulating what she will and will not tolerate with regards to the treatment of women and what the consequences of crossing her lines in the sand will be. She doesn’t threaten she just tells that what will happen. I LOVED that Luna is a true feminist who believes that all women have a right to do what they want with their own bodies, be that being a club whore, or being someone at a party who changes their mind when things go further than they want them to.

Luna is a 27 year old woman who makes gift baskets and sells them online and through gift shops. She is delivering a batch of baskets to one of her favourite stores when she sees a dog getting severely kicked. She waits until the abuser leaves and then cuts through the fence and steals the dog. Sadly she gets caught by bulky men in leather cuts and dragged back to the club house. She is told she has to stay for 30 days and help around the clubhouse to compensate for the theft of the dog.

It turns out this is an unusual MC that has some odd bylaws about the men in charge having one old lady between at least two if not more men, supposedly to bond the brothers more firmly. Therefore it should come as no surprise that there is a group of men interested in Luna.

I love the name of this series, “The Underestimated” as it matches Luna completely. She is short, cute and bubbly. She is also calm under fire, strong and fierce. There is a lot about Luna that you don’t see initially and it’s only as the book progresses that you understand more about who she is. However, right from the beginning she is funny, which always makes for a more entertaining read.

There is a lot happening in this book, with quite a complex plot. The characters are all interesting and a lot of stuff happens that you really don’t expect, which I loved.

This is definitely a book that is worth a re-read in a few months I think. I really hope there is another book in the pipeline in this series, because the set up for the next book is brilliant. So assuming it’s going to be a few months before the next one is out, I know I’ll want to re-read this book before reading the next one to remind myself of who everyone is and what is going on, especially as this book is quite complicated. I love it when I can really enjoy a re-read and this one will definitely work for that.

So in summary; great fun, sexy read, interesting characters, complex plot and great set up for next book in the series, so read it.

Review: A Touch Of Death (Secrets of Fae Duet Book 1) by JJ Dean

A Touch Of Death A Touch Of Death by J.J. Dean
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

An Interesting Idea

Novia is a fae. All the fae were kidnapped 5 years ago by humans and kept in cages to be experimented on. Novia is the last one left after they killed her entire community except her. She has just managed to escape and instead of being retaken decides to jump off a cliff into a river, preferring death to the continuing torture.

Whilst she is running through the woods, four supernaturals are feeling a pull. They are being drawn towards something important until they find Novia laying on the bank of a river, unconscious. They recognise her race and take her home, safe behind magical barriers.

This is the start of their journey together, learning about each other and forming bonds. This isn’t a fast moving book, until towards the end, when things speed up. However, it is interesting learning about Novia’s history and abilities. We also get to know something about the men who rescue her.

What we don’t get to know much about is why the humans are taking supernaturals hostage and experimenting on them. I think that must come in the next book. There are some holes in the world building and the plot, and to give the benefit of the doubt, I’ll say that those answers will come in the next book, but it did leave me questioning a few things that were annoying. But overall, it was an interesting read.

Review: A Witch Called Red (The Red Witch Chronicles Series Book 1) by Sami Valentine

A Witch Called Red A Witch Called Red by Sami Valentine
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a free copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review. All opinions are my own.

I’d probably give this a 4.5 stars if I could.

A woman wakes up in a hospital bed, unable to remember her name, her history or anything about the last 7 years of world events. She has fang marks on her neck and came in with nothing but the clothes on her back. She was found by Vic, a hunter with the Brotherhood of Bards and Heroes, an organisation that goes after the things that go bump in the night. With no resources or memories, she asks Vic if she can be his intern. Newly, and less than imaginatively christened, Red, she spends the next year learning the trade and fetching coffee. She also discovers a small ability for magic.

The body of the story starts in LA, where they have headed to help out a friend of Vic’s, a souled vampire called Quinn. They get drawn in to helping to solve a series of murders, whilst trying to maintain peace during the coming Blood Summit. All while trying to work out why she has the face of a woman from a hundred years ago that was involved so closely with the people involved in the investigation.

I really enjoyed this book. It was cleverly thought out and well paced. The characters were intriguing with plenty of hidden history to uncover. With vampires, there is always more history to uncover.

Red is an interesting lead, she has a mixture of strength and uncertainty. She has found a way to contribute to society and prevent more cases like hers occurring, but at the same time she has no roots in which to base her character. She knows what she thinks is right and wrong, but she has no reason as to why she thinks that way. It leaves her slightly unbalanced all the time. However, she is is still intelligent and curious, blended with determination and spirit which give her all the ingredients for a good hero.

Red’s history with the vampires of LA gives the story an extra dimension. The vampires feel like they know her, even if she isn’t the same woman. They have an instant bond that she doesn’t necessarily feel, but it’s hard to resist the pull of people who are trying connect with her, when she has no roots. However, it’s hard to trust their feelings for her.

I like her relationship with Vic, he’s such a great character. He’s easy going, funny and they have a light hearted and strong friendship. He’s a good mentor, who has become like a brother.

The world building is really well done. I like the idea of having vampires that have souls as well as those that don’t. There is mention of other beings, but this book solely focuses on vampires. This gives the author time to build up the characters without having to focus on a too extensive world building scenario, which stops the characters and plot being smothered.

Overall, this is a great mystery and there are plots within plots for Red and Vic to uncover. It definitely kept my interest. Whilst the murder mystery is solved at the end of the book there are still many questions to be answered about Red and the people who knew the woman who had the same face and I can’t wait to read about it in future books.

Review: Tethered to the World (A Phantom Touched Series Book 1) by Stacey Brutger

Tethered to the World Tethered to the World by Stacey Brutger
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Fabulously Different Supernaturals

I love it when writers come up with a very different perspective on the supernatural world. This author has different in spades!

Annora is a half blood Phantom. She can slide into the world between life and death and manipulate both, bring health or longer life to the sick and injured, and death and sickness to the healthy. She has spent the last 10 years trapped by her uncle in a deep dark place underground that she could not escape from, whilst he tortured her and sold her abilities to the highest bidder.

After finally managing to escape she found safety in a boxing gym, working there for free food and a tiny room. Rufus the man who helped her was attacked by a group of wolves and she saved him. In return Rufus arranged for her to stay safe by enrolling her in a university where she could be protected.

Once there she was placed within a team of strange and powerful supernaturals, much to their dismay. None of them wanted her in their team but they were ordered to train her to help her stay safe. As much as she didn’t want to trust them and rely on them and they felt the same about her, they needed to learn to work together.

I love that Annora is a strange and different kind of supernatural. It means there are no shortcuts in understanding her powers, so the author can reveal them slowly to the reader in her own time. I also like that the men on the team are not werewolves and vampires, they are either much less often seen creatures, or ones that are invented by the author. It makes it all much more intriguing and captivating.

Once I started reading this book, I found it impossible to put down (thank you so much for a sleepless night!) as the characters and the story were fascinating and I couldn’t wait to see what happened next.

There is a cliffhanger, which isn’t surprising as it seems there is an awful lot to cover in this storyline. I can’t even be really annoyed because the book was that good.

I highly recommend it!

Review: War of Fangs (The Unseen War Series Book 1) by LA Boruff

War of Fangs War of Fangs by L.A. Boruff
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Interesting Take on Gods and Monsters

Riley lost her family 5 years ago. Well, actually her family just disappeared. Her husband and two sons were gone, along with all their possessions, when she got home from work, and they were never heard from again.

Now 5 years have passed she is approached by a man called Antony who is pretending to be an FBI agent, who knew her husband and her closest friend Elias. When she calls his bluff he reveals that they and her husband grew up together and they are part of the Unseen community, a race of beings called Supay, that are what humans call vampires.

It turns out the world is filled with Unseen. They are supernatural fables humanity has told itself over the years, the vampires, fae, elves, witches, merfolk and all the other myths and legends. It is into this world that Riley is thrust, if she wants to see her children again and live long enough to see them grow up.

I loved Riley. She is a great character filled with determination and strength. After the loss of her family she managed to pick herself up and find ways of dealing with her loss. She took up martial arts and learnt to shoot, to protect herself if the people who took her family were to return. She also handles the information that changes the way she sees the world. She cries when she is hurt but picks herself back up again.

Elias and Anthony are interesting characters and it’s hard to tell what role they are to play in the book, so I won’t say anything more than that.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters are interesting and seem fully realised. The plot is complex and the world building is fascinating. I loved hearing how the supernatural races came about and the way that narrative was woven into our myths and legends was well one.

I will definitely be reading the next book in the series, though this book has a great HFN ending, that left my satisfied.

The twins’ mother has decided to sue for custody and Finn’s lawyer tells him that getting married will help his case to keep the kids. Kate offers to help him out.

Review: Lawless (Steel Demons MC Series Book 1) by Crystal Ash

Lawless Lawless by Crystal Ash
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Excellent Dystopian RH MC Book

Once again we are playing genre bingo in a way that doesn’t make me cringe. This was a really good book that blends genres seamlessly.

The year is 2100 and in a small nursing college Mariposa is graduating with a nursing degree. The world is falling apart and the USA has Collapsed. The next day Mariposa goes to register for her licence only to be told that her home is now under new laws that forbid women having a medical licence of any kind.

This is the changing face of the country in which she lives. Women are being rounded up and treated like chattel. They are sold as ‘wives’ to the strong, the rich and the corrupt. Somehow she makes it through the next three years travelling around trading her skills as a medic for room, board and safety.

Then the outpost she is temporarily working in turns into a place she can’t escape from. The Steel Demons MC show up and take over the outpost. Their reputation is of ruthless murderers and rapists and Mariposa is terrified. This is when her world changes.

This story is very nuanced. The world building is excellent and conveys completely the chaos and anarchy that would follow the collapse of government. The author draws on some of the events that are occurring in modern America with women’s reproductive rights being eroded by the men in power. This kind of environment could very well lead to women’s rights be completely withheld by the men in power, in 80 years time.

I like that The Collapse isn’t caused by one big catastrophe, like a virus or alien invasion, but is caused a subtle and more gradual political and military change in power.

This book doesn’t take narrative shortcuts. It has depth and looks closely at the personalities involved within the world that has been built. The author takes the time to subtly reveal the characters of those within the story.

At the end of the book, things have shifted for Mariposa, but not enormously. She has changed her mind about Reaper, the MC President, but she still does not trust him completely. Her situation is still fragile and she still doesn’t know herself and what she is capable of completely. This book moves her forward in her journey towards self knowledge, but it’s a small step on the path.

I really can’t wait for the next book, in this slow burn RH series. As this is the first book I’ve read by this author, I think I’ll have to look at others that are already published whilst I wait until December for the next one in this series.

Reclaiming Kendall Reclaiming Kendall by Brandy Slaven

One Long Epilogue

Whilst this book was really sweet, it felt kind of unnecessary. It was essentially one long epilogue.

The story takes up after the whole group have graduated college and started working. It’s just before the wedding. The story covers the wedding, the honeymoon and their return home to normality. There are lots and lots of hot scenes, which are always fun, but not a whole lot of plot. What little plot there is seems to involve hints about the future novellas that will wrap around this series, and problems with Mav’s 15 year old cousin.

Like I said, it’s a sweet book and I enjoyed reading it, I just felt there wasn’t much said or done in it that I didn’t get from reading the first two books.

Review: Infamous (Infamous Series Book 1 ) by Sariah Skye writing as Lizzie Fox

Sincerely Yours Sincerely Yours (Also Titled: Infamous) by Lizzie Fox
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Emotional and Beautiful

I’ve had this on my kindle for ages and I had almost forgotten about it, when Sariah Skye commented about it on a Facebook thread. It reminded me that I intended to read the book and dove straight in.

I cannot believe it took me so long to get around to this book. It’s fantastically emotional and you WILL have tears in your eyes as you feel your heart being squeezed in your chest. There are some very sad moments in this book, but at the same time there are many beautiful ones too.

Evan Michaels, or Evangeline Michaelson as she was born, is a rock star. She is rich, successful and incredibly lonely. The man she thought she would marry ended up hurting her horribly in a way that was public as well as painful. Christian is her manager and her best friend with benefits. He is her only support.

She gets comfort from her fans on social media and reads messages from Jordan that really touch her heart. He lost his sister in tragic circumstances and his words make her feel something other than pain and isolation.

Evan and Jordan are two lonely people bonded together through the memory of a girl who loved music. These two incredibly different people should never have met, but sometimes things happen for a reason.

The characters in this book are fantastically written. They are already formed, the writer just chooses to reveal layers and elements of their personalities to the reader on each page. This book is almost completely character driven. Emotions pour from every page and I couldn’t stop reading.

I can’t wait to read the second book in the series.

Review: Flawed (Gamer Girls Series Book 1) by Auryn Hadley and Kitty Cox

Flawed Flawed by Auryn Hadley
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Women Daring to Fight Online

I love Auryn Hadley, but I hadn’t really looked at this book at all. I tend to work my way through back catalogues of authors I like before I start on any collaborations because they always contain a different kind of writing. I saw Auryn mention Kitty Cox on her Facebook page and found this book that they wrote together and once I read the blurb I HAD to read the book.

This is not an easy book to read. It’s about how women are demonised and abused online if they have an opinion, or they try to become a face in the tech arena. This story follows a young woman, Dez, who was just a girl when she was abducted and tortured for having a well known gaming blog. After her abduction she couldn’t stand to have anyone touch her at all. She spent most of her time on opiates trying to blot away her constant fear and anxiety.

This is the story of how one man had faith that underneath all her flaws Dez is capable of contributing in the gaming industry. He brings her on board and shows he’s not scared of her flaws. He helps create an environment she can work in and she starts to make friends.

This is a difficult story to read if you are a rape survivor, or if you have experienced online abuse because of your gender. It feels real and raw and difficult. It’s also a book that gives you faith that you can rebuild a life after something cataclysmic hits, if you have the support you need.

I will be the first to admit that just because I have played a bit of WOW, does not mean I have a real idea about the gaming industry. A lot of the book went straight over my head, so I can’t comment on the veracity of the gaming language, but it also didn’t overwhelm me as a gaming outsider.

The story is sad and beautiful, poignant and angry. The love story is beautiful because of it’s lack of convention. There are two people drawn together despite their opposing addictions, learning to find value in themselves through their value to the other. Dez and Chance are wonderful in their dysfunctions and their acceptance of each other.

This is a really gripping book, and the plot is complex and intriguing. I like that there is an overarching plot that isn’t resolved in this book and that future Gamer Girls will take up the baton against ‘The Opposition’.

I will definitely be reading the next book in the series.

Review: Refusing Kendall (White Trash Trilogy Series Book 2) by Brandy Slaven

Refusing Kendall Refusing Kendall by Brandy Slaven
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Tough Times At College

Kendall and her guys are now well into their Freshman year at college. The house they rented near Kendall’s campus and 30 mins from the guys’ is mainly occupied by a solitary occupant. What they didn’t realise is that whilst football season was ongoing, freshman football players have a 10pm on weeknights curfew and have to stay in dorm rooms on campus. This means that during the week Kendall is alone and also when the guys are playing an away game at the weekend.

Being alone so often in the big house has made Kendall really jumpy, and she swears the place is haunted because there are strange little occurrences, such as picture frames moved and doors closed that shouldn’t be. She doesn’t want to complain and is determined to handle her fears on her own. Apart from being lonely, it appears that they have a stalker, as Kendall keeps getting silent phone messages.

Being away from the nastiness of High School should have made things easier for Kendall, but things don’t seem to be heading that way. There are fractures that form in the group and it might take something terrible to heal them.

Review: Fae: Lost (Lost Royal Series Book 1) by Eva Blackwing

Fae: Lost Fae: Lost by Eva Blackwing
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Enjoyable Start to The Series

I'd probably give this 3.5 Stars if I could.

I read this because I saw an advert on Facebook, which I very rarely do. I’d much rather have books recommended to me by the people in the groups rather than the advert algorithm, but the blurb looked good, so I gave it a go.

It was quite an entertaining book. The premise being that the MFC, Mor, was adopted and treated appallingly by her adoptive family. She was treated like a marketable commodity from being adopted and as such was curtailed in respect to her food, her exercise and wardrobe. She was also expected to marry someone suitable that would solidify the family business by tying it together with someone else equally successful.

Despite getting away to college she failed to get a job on graduation and ended up working in her brother’s coffee shop and living in the flat upstairs. That all changed with Atreyu walked in the shop and started flirting. Her brother witnessed it and snapped, kicking her out of the flat and firing her from her job. She was expected to return to the family home and marry who they told her to. Instead, Atreyu offered her a place to stay with him and his brothers.

Mor was attracted to all four of the brothers (in choice, if not in blood) and was treated with kindness for the first time in her life. They stood up for her and rescued her from her hideous family. The fact they were fae, that was a little bit surprising, but they were still really hot!

The book was fun, there were sweet bits, sad bits and some plain traumatising bits. Mor was a strange mix of extremely assertive and insecure. It felt inconsistent, but it was kind of explained later on. It still made for an confusing read for a chunk of the book.

The four fae men were sweet and affectionate and really supportive of Mor. All four wanted to spend time with her and couldn’t seem to stop touching her. We also learnt that fae society is a little more liberal than the human one and there are often multiple partners in a marriage.

There are all sorts of problems with both Mor’s family and Ben’s (one of the fae guys). There’s lots of angst and arguing but none of it is really with each other. There’s very little conflict between the guys and Mor, it’s mainly against the rest of the world.

Whilst the book was really enjoyable, it wasn’t particularly gripping. I think it was because there was so much world building and covering of their back story. Stuff happened but I wasn’t particularly engaged with the conflicts. I don’t know why, may be it was because I was reading late at night and I was tired, or maybe I just didn’t connect with the characters the way I felt I should. It’s hard to tell. Despite that, it was a pretty good book, and I might be interested in reading the next in the series, when it comes out.

Review: Newly Undead In Dark River (Dark River Days Series Book 1) by Grace McGinty

Newly Undead In Dark River Newly Undead In Dark River by Grace McGinty
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Excellent Paranormal Reverse Harem

I really REALLY enjoyed this book. I had a smile on my face most of the way through. It has that perfect elusive blend of humour, romance, angst and mystery.

Mika is a 20 year old American student hitchhiking through Canada with friends. When the friends head on home, Mika decides to carry on a little bit further. Sadly this leads to her waking up dead in a ditch outside a town in the middle of nowhere. Well, she didn’t know she was dead when she woke up, but it soon became obvious when the towns inhabitants told her she was now a vampire - just like them.

Dark River is a town made up completely of vampires. These are vampires who have decided to live away from the temptation of humans to protect them. They only drink bagged blood and try to lead fulfilling and normal lives. She learns that the town considers her being changed into a vampire the crime of murder, because she did not give consent.

This starts her journey into becoming a fully fledged member of the town and getting her fangs into being a vampire. Her vampire senses and increased libido make it hard to resist all the gorgeous men around her, even the local shifter liaison is magnetic. With her new makeover, of hair, makeup, wardrobe and name (it’s changed to Raine) and change in species, she gains confidence she never previously had and jumps into the local dating pool feet first.

This isn’t the most challenging book in the world, but it is exceptional at what it is, which is a Paranormal Reverse Harem Romance. The characters are intriguing, the world building is tantalising and the plot is funny, lusty and sad. Some would say this isn’t a true Reverse Harem because there is some m/m action, and it’s more like a Poly situation, I don’t care because at the heart of it all is Mika/Raine, holding the men all together.

There has been enough dangling of possible men for the harem in the future and the explicit mention of trouble in the future for the town, that I’m pretty sure there are going to be more books in this series. All I can say is “I can’t wait!”

Review: Claiming Her Mates: Book Two (Claiming Her Mates Series Book 2) by Dia Cole

Claiming Her Mates: Book Two Claiming Her Mates: Book Two by Dia Cole
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

The Apocalypse Continues

Though safe and sound in Sanctuary, Vana and her new mates leave the walls surrounding the grounds for the first time. They encounter survivors from the ski resort where Nathan was heading before the storm hit.

Needing to know if Nathan and his daughter survived, Liam and Gabriel decide to fly over the resort in the helicopter Tasha in all her craziness thought to provide in Sanctuary. The alpha female may be psychotic, but she planned for everything!

With new people around and the potential for rescuing even more, things are bound to change for the brand new Faction, but Vana is undaunted. Where Vana leads, her Faction follows.

With this book we learn more about werewolf culture and their physical and mental abilities. All of their abilities are going to be needed to survive the zombie apocalypse.

With all the action in this book, it would be easy to overlook the emotional content, but this author is good at making sure it is front and centre of the story, without letting it distract from the plot.

I hate that I’m going to have to wait for the next book in the series, but I’m sure it will be worth it. This has turned into a pretty good series.

Claiming Her Mates Claiming Her Mates by Dia Cole
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Less Complex Than the Prequel

I actually read this book months before reading the prequel, Claiming The Nanny, and I had forgotten until I started to read it again. You can tell that the prequel is the more recent book because it is much more nuanced than this book. However, it is still a good book.

This book starts with Havana working as a stripper again after Nathan dumped her. The Canine Flu mentioned in the prequel has turned into a pandemic and life is tough for strippers. After a lousy shift she discovers that the her last client is really sick and it’s not from the flu. His veins are black and he is dying very quickly.

It quickly appears that the vaccine designed to help prevent the flu wasn’t tested and it is turning a vast number of the world’s population into zombies, all except the werewolves who are immune.

Vana is trying to deal with the new disease when three men turn up to take her to safety. It turns out that Nathan sent them to try and get her to safety. However, all three men are drawn to her as she is to them. The men know that Nathan will never stand for them to act on their feelings.

This book is actually a dystopian thriller as well as a paranormal reverse harem romance. Things just got a bit more complicated!

Review: Claiming The Nanny (Claiming Her Mates Series Book 0.5) by Dia Cole

Claiming The Nanny Claiming The Nanny by Dia Cole
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Interesting Paranormal Romance

I’m going to start out with one word - CLIFFHANGER!!!!

OK, now that’s out of the way, and I do believe the next book in the series is out, I can talk about the actual book.

This is a pretty interesting wolf shifter romance. The book is about Havana, a human stripper, who wants to change occupations. She’s been on her own since junior year of high school, when she dropped out to earn enough to survive on, after losing her mother. She took the only job she could, working as a stripper.

Now there is a serial killer on the loose, targeting strippers and her friend was the latest victim. Vana is desperate to get out so she’s applying to be a nanny to a rich business man. She has plenty of babysitting experience but no qualifications. To her surprise she gets the job after she resists the demands of her charge.

She’s incredibly attracted to her new boss Nathan, and he is her, but they both resist because she is his new employee and his daughter really likes her, she can’t be compelled by his alpha wolf daughter and she really needs the job.

There’s a tonne of plot to this book that revolves around Nathan’s “relationship” with his daughter’s mother, but there is also stuff about the history of the wolf shifters and how their politics work. This is obviously all information that will be needed for the rest of the series.

It’s actually quite a gripping story, with passion and romance and loyalties being tested. I really enjoyed it and plan on reading the next book immediately, because like I said - CLIFFHANGER!!!!

Review: War Whore (Soiled Dove Series Book 2) by Tyranni Thomas

War Whore War Whore by Tyranni Thomas
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

A View of The Civil War From the Camp Followers Point of View

This was a really interesting book. It tells of the American Civil War from an unusual perspective, from the point of view of the women in the camp.

The tale starts with a family in the South preparing to be over run by the Northern forces. Flossie May has just turned 17 and has two brothers and two sisters. As the eldest girl she is expected to look after the rest.

When the army reaches their home, her father is expected to join the army and the rest of the family are to follow him. Their house is burned to the ground and they are given two tents and two bed rolls between the 7 of them. The two boys join up to prevent them all starving.

This is the start of many horrible decisions the family have to make in order to survive. The camp is filled with the blood and cries of wounded soldiers, the moans of whores and the stink of death and disease. It is in this environment that Flossie May discovers her strength and determination to do everything she can to help her remaining family survive. She finds a different path from any that she or her family ever expected for her.

The book is filled with a contrast of kindnesses and despair and it’s a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. I really loved Flossie May. She was so brave and strong, even when she felt like her knees were going to buckle, because she had to be. She was also capable of a great deal of love, even in her darkest days.

I really enjoyed the book and will be reading the next in the series.

Review: Perfect Pride (Gesa's Menagerie Series Book 9) by Kaye Draper

Perfect Pride Perfect Pride by Kaye Draper
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Good Ending To a Really Fun Series

This is the last book in the series and I’m going to miss it. The only good thing is that there is going to be a spin off series, so I’m assuming we will get to see Gesa and her Pride in the future. I really hope so because these fabulously weird characters have got under my skin.

In this book Kai goes off to find out if the reports of another kraken being sighted are true. While she’s away, the Pride becomes friendly with Troya, the girl that White has had them watching. Gesa also has to find a way to tell the rest of the Pride she’s pregnant.

It feels like a lot happens in a very short space of time, with this book, but I think it’s just because so many story arcs come to fruition in these few pages. It’s a good ending to a series, but I really wish there was an epilogue, I want to see what family life for the Pride looks like. Maybe we’ll see that in the spin off. We can always hope.

Review: The Wind's Call (The Broken Lands Series Book 4) by TA White

The Wind's Call The Wind's Call by T.A. White
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wonderful New Chapter in The Story of The Broken Lands

I loved the first three books in The Broken Lands series. This new book starts a new chapter. Shea, the MFC in the first three books is still involved in this new book, but now the MFC has changed to Eva, the Herd Mistress that Shea met in the earlier books.

Eva is a tagalong. She ran away from her village when they decided to sacrifice her to help restore their fields their former glory. She overheard a mother and father talking about if and ran away. Eva was discovered after two weeks of foraging in the forest by a feisty and stubborn horse and the man chasing her down. She ended up being allowed into the Trateri army to help with the horses.

Now in the Highlands, Eva has been part of the Trateri army for over a year. She is mainly overlooked as she keeps quiet and tries not to get noticed. Then one day she finds a winged horse trapped in a barbed net. She feels compelled to free him and help him fight off his captors with the help of her vicious horse companion. This leads to a potential treaty between their two peoples.

I love this new direction for the series. This author has taken the amazing world that was constructed for the first three books and built even further on it. Secondary characters have become main characters and vice versa.

I really like how the humans and the mythologicals have to learn to work together for the sake of their mutual future. New mythologicals have started showing up and somehow they seem to respond to Eva.

Eva is a very interesting character. She had a pretty rough upbringing as she was always considered too different from the other villagers. Always an outsider she has learned to appreciate the freedoms she has gained from living with the Trateri. Whilst her new life isn’t perfect, it is rewarding. She is very slow to trust, due to her upbringing, but she is starting to make friends and wants to help both the amazing winged horse and her adopted people.

The book ended on a HFN and I really hope a new book in this series is coming soon, because as well as the amazing world building and characters, the plot is always fantastic in these book too. This is a brilliant series and one of the best I’ve seen in recent years. I highly recommend it, and this new book in the series.

Review: Baptisms of Fire and Ice (Shattered Providence Series Book 1) by Nadia Sheridan

Baptisms of Fire and Ice Baptisms of Fire and Ice by Nadia Sheridan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Superb Start to A New Urban Fantasy Series

I have read and enjoyed Clara Coulson books and when she stated this book was being released under her publishing company I decided to give it a go, especially as it part of Kindle Unlimited. (I’m always more likely to take a risk on a book if it’s part of my subscription).

I’m so glad I decided to take a chance on this book because it was excellent. I was enthralled from the first few pages. It’s a brilliant concept and absolutely gripping.

The books starts on the day that earth is pummelled by meteorites that seemed to appear from nowhere. Our main character is Adara Caine and she is a PhD student and after the meteorite shower she wakes up face down in a pond covered in goop and ash caused by the flaming buildings. Little does she know that she has been the recipient of a tiny fraction of God’s powers, giving her powers that she does not understand.

Adara is not alone in her new abilities, but she is the only one who is visited by an angel and given the information she needs to help save earth from the army of demons intent on breaking through the barrier that has previously kept them away.

This book moves at a break neck speed throughout and you barely have time to breathe as you turn the pages. The world building is done brilliantly as information is passed to the reader via the characters gradually increasing understanding of their new world. They are as ignorant of events as we are.

I really liked the characters, even though the speed at which the plot moved gave us little chance to get to know them, with the exception of Adara. Even Adara is quite unknown because of pace of things. We know enough about her to understand her motives for taking on demons and to know that her life hasn’t been easy, despite being loved by a devoted father. We know that she has experienced crises and survived them and that has given her an element of internal strength that someone untested might not have.

As this is a part of a trilogy I’m assuming that the other characters will become more known in the next books, as hopefully there will be a little more time for them to breathe, rather than having to react swiftly to unknown dangers.

I am excited about the next book and really look forward to the end of the November for it’s release. If you are in the mood for an action packed Urban Fantasy book, there aren’t many better than this.

Review: Hissy Fit (The Southern Gentleman Series Book 1) by Lani Lynn Vale

Hissy Fit Hissy Fit by Lani Lynn Vale
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Funny and Sweet

I’d give this book 3.5 stars if I could.

This book is the first in a new series. Raleigh is a teacher, who is renowned throughout the town as the clumsiest person to ever walk it’s streets. She has had an unrequited crush on Coach Ezra McDuff since high school. He doesn’t know she exists because she is quiet and shy, and always has been.

Ezra finally notices Raleigh when she falls over a box of wrapping paper, taking out himself and three others. On his way to the floor the giant box of condoms, he bought for his nephew, smacks her in the face giving her a bloody nose. Not the best way to get someone’s notice!

After Ezra finally notices Raleigh he can’t stop thinking about her. Since she has an enormous crush, it doesn’t take much to persuade her to go out with him. There doesn’t seem to be much challenge in the relationship, all their problems come from outside sources.

There were a couple of instances when Ezra’s behaviour was a bit lacking, that were just brushed over, which annoyed me somewhat. It also seemed a little idealistic that a relationship based on a lifetime’s crush would have such a smooth transition from imagination and longing to actually being together.

Another review stated that Raleigh was a bit of a caricature of the naive, clumsy, virginal teacher, and I have to agree with that somewhat. However, there were a few things that counterbalance that view point. She really cares about her students, despite her fear of the very large senior football players. Her relationship with her family is solid as is her friendship with Camryn. She has experienced loss and pain which gives her some depth.

Basically this, like most books by the author, is a fairly easy read, filled with sweet romance and humour. It’s an unchallenging read, but it is pretty entertaining.

I've Been Interviewed

I reviewed Pact Of The White Blade Knights by Barbara Russell on 30th December 2019, and Barbara was interested in my review process. She asked if she could interview me for her blog and I agreed. I'm glad that I did because the questions really made me think.

Review: The Heat of the Dragon's Heart (Harem of Fire Series Book 2) by Willa Hart

The Heat of the Dragon's Heart The Heat of the Dragon's Heart by Willa Hart
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Things Are Heating Up

The first book in this series was definitely a very slow burn, but this book jumped straight into the action!

Uncle Max is still missing but Favor has been able to speak to him in visions and read notes he leaves in the same place, in the dragon language (which she doesn’t know). Favor’s powers seem to be increasing all the time, especially as she grows more connected to the guys. The five dragons and Favor seem to be bonding more closely together and the guys don’t seem to be jealous of each other.

Favor and the guys are determined to find out what the Romanian dragon is looking for, and why Favor seems to be a target. It’s stirring up dreams that seem to be more than just memories or random images. Favor feels that she is adrift, not quite understanding what is going on or why. She feels that Uncle Max didn’t really train her to be a dragon keeper at all.

This book is definitely filled with steamy scenes between Favor and her dragons. It’s quite a jump in heat between the two books, though I suppose the first book could be seen as the build up to the conclusion.

There are quite a lot of things happening outside the bedroom too. The plot speeds up and the pressures mount more of Favor’s abilities are exposed.

I am enjoying this series. It’s fun and entertaining.

Review: The Spark of the Dragon's Heart (Harem of Fire Series Book 1) by Willa Hart

The Spark of the Dragon's Heart The Spark of the Dragon's Heart by Willa Hart
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Interesting Start To A Series

This reverse harem is a little bit different. It’s set in modern California and revolves around Favor a 22 year old part time student and part time trainee Private Detective. She was orphaned at a very young age and barely remembered her parents. Then she spent years in different foster homes until at age 17 her aunt and uncle found her and took her in.

Her uncle is a Private Detective and is VERY old school. She starts to work with him even before graduating high school, as his five nephews used to work with him but left to work for the competition.

At age 22 Favor is given her first case after her uncle leaves her a file and a note on her desk. She finds that she can’t investigate on her own because her client, a dragon, refuses to deal with a human. Favor isn’t a regular human. She’s a Dragon Keeper, a race of humans who support dragons.

Favor calls on her uncle’s nephews to help with the case and they come. Favor feels an instant connection to the nephews and they give her lots of support in resuming the case.

I like the idea of a Dragon Keeper, who is human but with extra abilities that can help the dragon they support. Favor is an interesting character. She grew up surrounded by love but that was cut short very early and then she had to learn lots of survival skills to cope with multiple fostering, all the time buoyed by the memories of being loved as a child.

Favor’s uncle and aunt are loving both towards each other and towards Favor. She has lots of support as she learns about the world of dragons that her parents inhabited, as her father was a dragon keeper.

This is a very slow burn RH and I am looking forward to getting to know the nephews in the next book as their individual characters are not explained in much detail in this book, except tangentially in relation to Favor.

I will definitely be reading the next book as I enjoyed the slightly different dragon shifter set up.

Review: Warrior Fae Princess (Warrior Fae Series Book 2) by KF Breene

Warrior Fae Princess Warrior Fae Princess by K.F. Breene
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Brilliant Story Telling

I love the way K F Breene has built this universe and the creatures within it. I know that I have skipped a lot of the world building as I’ve not read the first part of the series, not realising I was missing it because of the groupings of the novels. This book contained a lot more about things I knew nothing about, with magical characters I now know are from earlier books. It was intriguing enough to make me want to go back and read those books but it wasn’t overly confusing, despite my lack of knowledge.

It’s in this book we follow Charity’s magical growth as her magical abilities continue to swell and surge out of control. The main thing keeping her in check has been Devon’s alpha powers, which have been pushed to grow in order to balance Charity’s. It has made him a force to be reckoned with at a very young age.

Charity managed to hang on until the end of the school term, but everyone knew she needed to go to the Warrior Fae to get her magic balanced properly and to receive training. The journey is not an easy one, but she receives help, support and protection from Devon and his pack, plus some extra people drafted in by Roger, the Alpha in charge of North America.

One of the things I loved about this book was that the author isn’t afraid to have characters exhibit both good and bad traits. No one is wholly one thing or another. This gives the characters depth and creates tension and allows for great story telling. This holds true for entire races of supernatural beings as well as individuals. The author shows that each race has both good and bad traits that can either help or harm themselves and others.

This book has an awful lot going for it and I know I want to read what happens next. I hope a new book is released soon!
