A View of The Civil War From the Camp Followers Point of View

This was a really interesting book. It tells of the American Civil War from an unusual perspective, from the point of view of the women in the camp.

The tale starts with a family in the South preparing to be over run by the Northern forces. Flossie May has just turned 17 and has two brothers and two sisters. As the eldest girl she is expected to look after the rest.

When the army reaches their home, her father is expected to join the army and the rest of the family are to follow him. Their house is burned to the ground and they are given two tents and two bed rolls between the 7 of them. The two boys join up to prevent them all starving.

This is the start of many horrible decisions the family have to make in order to survive. The camp is filled with the blood and cries of wounded soldiers, the moans of whores and the stink of death and disease. It is in this environment that Flossie May discovers her strength and determination to do everything she can to help her remaining family survive. She finds a different path from any that she or her family ever expected for her.

The book is filled with a contrast of kindnesses and despair and it’s a bit of an emotional rollercoaster. I really loved Flossie May. She was so brave and strong, even when she felt like her knees were going to buckle, because she had to be. She was also capable of a great deal of love, even in her darkest days.

I really enjoyed the book and will be reading the next in the series.
