Review: The Wind's Call (The Broken Lands Series Book 4) by TA White

The Wind's Call The Wind's Call by T.A. White
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Wonderful New Chapter in The Story of The Broken Lands

I loved the first three books in The Broken Lands series. This new book starts a new chapter. Shea, the MFC in the first three books is still involved in this new book, but now the MFC has changed to Eva, the Herd Mistress that Shea met in the earlier books.

Eva is a tagalong. She ran away from her village when they decided to sacrifice her to help restore their fields their former glory. She overheard a mother and father talking about if and ran away. Eva was discovered after two weeks of foraging in the forest by a feisty and stubborn horse and the man chasing her down. She ended up being allowed into the Trateri army to help with the horses.

Now in the Highlands, Eva has been part of the Trateri army for over a year. She is mainly overlooked as she keeps quiet and tries not to get noticed. Then one day she finds a winged horse trapped in a barbed net. She feels compelled to free him and help him fight off his captors with the help of her vicious horse companion. This leads to a potential treaty between their two peoples.

I love this new direction for the series. This author has taken the amazing world that was constructed for the first three books and built even further on it. Secondary characters have become main characters and vice versa.

I really like how the humans and the mythologicals have to learn to work together for the sake of their mutual future. New mythologicals have started showing up and somehow they seem to respond to Eva.

Eva is a very interesting character. She had a pretty rough upbringing as she was always considered too different from the other villagers. Always an outsider she has learned to appreciate the freedoms she has gained from living with the Trateri. Whilst her new life isn’t perfect, it is rewarding. She is very slow to trust, due to her upbringing, but she is starting to make friends and wants to help both the amazing winged horse and her adopted people.

The book ended on a HFN and I really hope a new book in this series is coming soon, because as well as the amazing world building and characters, the plot is always fantastic in these book too. This is a brilliant series and one of the best I’ve seen in recent years. I highly recommend it, and this new book in the series.
