Review: War of Fangs (The Unseen War Series Book 1) by LA Boruff

War of Fangs War of Fangs by L.A. Boruff
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Interesting Take on Gods and Monsters

Riley lost her family 5 years ago. Well, actually her family just disappeared. Her husband and two sons were gone, along with all their possessions, when she got home from work, and they were never heard from again.

Now 5 years have passed she is approached by a man called Antony who is pretending to be an FBI agent, who knew her husband and her closest friend Elias. When she calls his bluff he reveals that they and her husband grew up together and they are part of the Unseen community, a race of beings called Supay, that are what humans call vampires.

It turns out the world is filled with Unseen. They are supernatural fables humanity has told itself over the years, the vampires, fae, elves, witches, merfolk and all the other myths and legends. It is into this world that Riley is thrust, if she wants to see her children again and live long enough to see them grow up.

I loved Riley. She is a great character filled with determination and strength. After the loss of her family she managed to pick herself up and find ways of dealing with her loss. She took up martial arts and learnt to shoot, to protect herself if the people who took her family were to return. She also handles the information that changes the way she sees the world. She cries when she is hurt but picks herself back up again.

Elias and Anthony are interesting characters and it’s hard to tell what role they are to play in the book, so I won’t say anything more than that.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters are interesting and seem fully realised. The plot is complex and the world building is fascinating. I loved hearing how the supernatural races came about and the way that narrative was woven into our myths and legends was well one.

I will definitely be reading the next book in the series, though this book has a great HFN ending, that left my satisfied.
