I’d probably give this book 3.5 ⭐️ if I could.
Aria is 18 when she finds out she is pregnant with a guy she had a short term relationship with. When she decides she wants to keep the baby he asks her to marry him and she eventually agrees.
The marriage turns out to be a mistake and she has to run, ending up in a different state, hundreds of miles away, in an old house in the middle of the countryside. Next door happens to be three gorgeous and saintly men.
I have mixed feelings about this book. I really like the characters and the plot but I’m uncertain I ‘click’ with the author’s style of writing. A lot of really bad stuff happens to Aria but there’s a kind of distance from the emotions of it all. I understand that with abuse victims it’s not uncommon to avoid thinking about bad things and pretend everything is ok, but it’s hard to connect with a character who isn’t really connecting with themselves. A lot of things are really glossed over and hinted at more than outright stated and whilst that is good for people with triggers and those of a sensitive disposition, it made it hard to understand the character.
As the book progressed and Aria got away from the situation she found herself in, I felt more connected with her. Up until then, everything feels like it’s a recitation of someone watching through a window.
Of course, as I felt more connected with the character, the men she met and the friends and family she had supporting her, the book ended on a cliffhanger! I want to know what happens, so this means the author got to me despite myself! I’ll have to watch out for the next book so I can find out what is going on.
