Review: Untamed Magic (Academy of The Elites Series Book 1) by Alexis Calder

Untamed Magic Untamed Magic by Alexis Calder
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Solid Start To The Series

I’d probably give this 3.5 ⭐️ if I could.

This is a solid start to an Academy Reverse Harem series. It’s always hard to judge from the first book in these types of series whether the series is going to end up being original or not and so far, it’s not looking like it will be, but I could be wrong.

Even though the plot doesn’t scream originality the writing style is relaxed and fluid, which I always enjoy, and the characters seem ok. They are, however, a little formulaic. The MFC was raised by an alcoholic aunt after the death of her parents. She doesn’t know she is a mage until two men try to kill her and instead she kills them with fire. She is given a deal, either go to magical prison or go to an academy for Elite Supernaturals. Of course, she chooses the academy.

As she is a poor scholarship student surrounded by wealthy supernaturals she feels out of her depth but is very attracted to several of her fellow students; an incubus, an alpha werewolf and twin mages. It turns out they are very attracted to her right back.

She is bullied a bit, but she knows how to handle that. What she doesn’t know is anything about the supernatural world and no one seems to be cutting her any slack for only discovering about magic the day before arriving at the academy.

The characters are a little one-dimensional, possibly because there isn’t much time to try and get to know them, there are a lot characters introduced at the same time and it’s not a terribly long book. Add into that limited time the actual world building and plot and it means the characters history is a little sketchy.

Like I said, it a solid start, but the series as a whole could go either way depending on how good a writer the author actually is.
