Review: Magical Redemption (Biomystic Security Series Book 4) by Jaliza A Burwell

Magical Redemption Magical Redemption by Jaliza A. Burwell
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Retribution and Redemption

This is the fourth book in a continuing series. You need to read the first books to understand this one. There is a natural break at the end of this book, though there is a hook for future books.

After the attack on Biomystic Security and the loss of friends and colleagues, Laila is battered emotionally, physically and magically. Told that she can’t use her magic until she recovers enough means that she can’t even work and it makes her even more miserable. Trying to come to terms with temporarily losing the use of her magic and the loss of her friends she knows she can’t return to her home because it’s not safe, so she’s stuck in a company apartment. On top of this, her boyfriends don’t understand that magic is a part of her and can’t be ignored completely. Frustrated and feeling misunderstood and isolated she becomes a victim of another magical attack, one that seems tied to the work she’d been doing that Padraig tried to steal.

It’s been a while since I read the first three books in this series but I was reminded about it recently so decided to return to this book. I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed the first books and was pleased to find that I was able to follow the plot without having to re-read the first three books. The information that I needed to remind me of previous events was given in a smooth and unobtrusive manner, which I always appreciate.

In this book, we get to see more of the dragon that is moving to the city because of Laila. We finally get the full explanation of what it is he wants. We also get to learn more about the Elementalists and about Laila’s past. There is a lot of plot in this book with peril to both Laila and her lovers. She also has to deal with unfamiliar magic and fear of the unknown. The book primarily deals with the suspense/adventure part of the plot and Laila’s emotional frailties and to a certain extent, I wish there had been more about the connection between Laila and the men in her life. I didn’t feel much of a bond in this book, there just seemed to be a lot of tension, and not the good kind. I hope in future books, this gets resolved after facing a few of her demons in this book.

I won’t leave it so long, this time, until I read the next book in the series, because despite the lack of emotional connections there was a still a really interesting storyline.
